GENERAL INFORMATION
The Registry of Italians Resident Abroad (A.I.R.E.) was established by Law n. 470/1988 and contains the personal data of Italian citizens who live outside the country for a period of more than 12 months. It is administered by Italian municipalities on the basis of the data and information provided by Italy’s consular offices around the world.
WHAT TO DO
- A.I.R.E. REGISTRATION
Registration in A.I.R.E. is the right and duty of an Italian citizen living abroad (art. 6 Law no. 470/1988); it provides access to the services of Italian consular offices, and facilitates the exercise of important rights such as:
- voting by correspondence (mail-in ballot) in political elections and referendums,
- obtaining or renewing identification and travel documents and certificates;
- driver’s license renewals.
A.I.R.E. registration is mandatory for:
- Italian citizens who reside in a foreign country for more than 12 months;
- Italian citizens who reside outside Italy because they were born abroad or because they acquired Italian citizenship and do not live in Italy.

- UPDATING YOUR A.I.R.E. INFORMATION
Once you are registered in A.I.R.E, in addition to advising the Italian consular authorities of your arrival in a specific consular district, you must also promptly advise of any:
- change of address;
- change in civil status, for optional subsequent registration in Italy (marriage, birth, divorce, death, etc.);
- loss of Italian citizenship.
If you return to Italy definitively, you must go in person to the City Hall of the municipality where you reside to file your new address. The municipality will then remove your name from the A.I.R.E list, and transfer it to the A.P.R. list (Anagrafe Popolazione Residente), and inform this consular office.
HOW TO PROCEED
If you are an Italian citizen living abroad and are over the age of majority, you can register with A.I.R.E. by means of a statement to the consular office with territorial jurisdiction for your place of residence within 90 days of your arrival. This will result in the removal of your name from the A.P.R. of your prior place of residence in Italy.
- FAST IT
A.I.R.E. registration, and other consular services, are now available through the new online portal: Fast It.
By creating a Fast It account, users can register in A.I.R.E., follow the status of their request, communicate directly with the consular office, change or update their personal information (including their transfer to a new consular district.)
To sign up, visit the portal and follow the instructions to set up an account. Users with a SPID number can use it to access the portal.
Once you have an account, select A.I.R.E. registration and follow the instructions. You will also need to upload the following documents in three separate files:
- request form (produced by the portal following completion) signed and dated;
- copy of your valid Italian passport (the pages providing personal data, the issuing office, and signature) and of any family members residing at the same address. Foreign identity documents are accepted if Italian documents are not available;
- proof of residence with current address (driver’s license, employment contract, utility bill, property tax receipt) and, only for registrants not born in Canada, a copy of your Permanent Resident card, or work or study permit or Certificate of Canadian citizenship.
Registration is free of charge.
For technical problems or additional information, email consolare.ottawa@esteri.it.
- ALTERNATIVELY
If you are unable to use the Fast It portal to register with A.I.R.E. or advise of a move to a different consular district, you will have to fill out, date, sign the AIRE-REGISTRATION-FORM and email it to consolare.ottawa@esteri.it.
The form, completed and forwarded by every Italian citizen over the age of majority residing at the same address, must be accompanied by scanned copies of the documents listed above for registration via the FAST IT portal.
To advise of an address change within the same consular district, please complete, date, sign the AIRE CAMBIO INDIRIZZO-CHANGE OF ADDRESS FORM and send it to consolare.ottawa@esteri.it along with:
- copy of your valid Italian passport (pages providing personal data, the issuing office, and signature) and of any family members at the same address. Foreign identity documents are accepted if Italian documents are not available;
- proof of residence with current address (driver’s license, employment contract, utility bill, property tax receipt) and only for registrants not born in Canada, a copy of your Permanent Resident card, or work or study permit or Certificate of Canadian citizenship.
Please provide your correct and complete mailing address, according to the postal regulations for your country of residence.
IMPORTANT
Out-of-date information, in particular regarding mailing addresses, will make it impossible for the office to contact you or for you to receive election notices and ballot packages.
