Emergency Travel Document (ETD)

In emergency situations (for example a tourist whose passport is stolen or lost), an Italian citizen may be issued an Emergency Travel Document (EDT) to return to Italy or to his/her/their country of residence (as listed in AIRE). The EDT’s validity is strictly limited to the required travel period and is issued to the Italian citizen in person only. An appointment may be made by contacting the Consular Office at consolare.ottawa@esteri.it or 613-232-2401. The following documents are required:

  • Completed ETD Request Form (Adults) or EDT Request Form (Minors);
  • Police report of the loss or theft;
  • Loss/theft of passport Report to present to the Consular Office;
  • Two identical colour photos, on white background, front-facing, passport-size (35x45mm – the subject’s face must fill 70% of the photograph);
  • Proof of airline reservation for return to Italy or to the country of residence, indicating border crossings;
  • Identification document such as a driver’s licence or identity card (photocopies accepted) or a photocopy of the lost or stolen passport. In the absence of any identification documents, the Consular Office will have to verify the applicant’s identity prior to issuing the ETD.

The fee for the EDT is listed in the Table of consular fees (esteri.it).
