Contemporary Art Day 2021

Giosetta Fioroni – Pop Sentimentale

Saturday, December 11, noon to midnight

The 17th Italian Contemporary Art Day takes place on December 11, 2021. This year’s edition centres on performance art, not only the physical presence of the artist, but the urgent need to find a new dynamic for audience-performer interaction through the sharing of space.

For Contemporary Art Day 2021, the Embassy of Italy is pleased to present Giosetta Fioroni – Pop Sentimentale, a documentary by Gabriele Raimondi (3DProduzioni) in Italian with English subtitles, on Saturday, December 11, available from noon to midnight on its YouTube channel.

Giosetta Fioroni, who remains active today, was the only female member of the renowned Piazza del Popolo school of Italian pop artists. The documentary looks at her life and the international appreciation of her work through a series of exhibitions in Rome, Moscow, Paris, rural Veneto, and Milan where she was the subject of a major retrospective in 2018 at the Museo del Novecento. Through interviews with Fioroni at her studio and in her home in Rome, the viewer is immersed in a fertile season in Italian art and culture. Giosetta’s recollections and stories include Mario Schifano and the other artists of the Piazza del Popolo group, as well as Federico Fellini and Marcel Duchamp. Threaded throughout is her love story with the writer Goffredo Parise, her longtime partner. Together they are participants in and witnesses to the social and ideological ferment of the 1950s and 60s. What emerges is a vibrant portrait of the artist, enriched with archival footage and interviews with friends, fellow artists, critics, and curators who knew her and shared her life and passions.
