Syria: Minister Gentiloni supports Kerry – Lavrov agreement and assures support to upcoming UN negotiations

“The agreement reached last night in Geneva opens the door to a breakthrough in the dramatic war in Syria” said the Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Paolo Gentiloni.

He went on: “Italy supports the diplomatic effort made by John Kerry and Sergey Lavrov and is committed to support the achievement of an effective generalized cessation of hostilities as of Monday evening”. In addition to the cessation of hostilities, the agreement also provides for access to humanitarian aid to the people in need, starting from Aleppo, a coordination in the fight against terrorism and the reestablishment of the conditions necessary to resume the political process.

“Italy expects the agreement to be implemented by all the parties concerned, in the interest of the Syrian population and of the future of the Country” Mr. Gentiloni added.

“Today I confirmed to the UN Envoy Staffan de Mistura that Italy supports the negotiating proposals that, if the truce is enforced, will be put forward by the United Nations in the next ministerial summit on Syria, which will take place in 10 days in New York under the chairmanship of Kerry and Lavrov” said Mr. Gentiloni.
