Italian Marines: the Foreign Ministry expresses satisfaction over the Indian Supreme Court’s decision to allow Girone to return to Italy

Italian Marine Salvatore Girone might be going home any day now. The Foreign Ministry expresses satisfaction over today’s decision of the Indian Supreme Court to immediately enforce The Hague Court of Arbitration’s decision of 29 April, as recently requested by Italy. In line with the decision of The Hague Court of Arbitration, Italy and India have cooperated during the last few weeks in order to define the terms and conditions of Girone’s return and permanence in Italy while awaiting the conclusion of the arbitration proceeding on the Enrica Lexie case. While waiting to finally welcome home Salvatore Girone, the Government renews its commitment to comply with the terms and conditions established by the Supreme Court of India. Today’s decision is an important result that recognises the effort made by the Italian Government in resorting to an international arbitration to uphold the reasons of the two Italian Marines. Italy will show the same commitment during the next phases of the arbitration proceeding.
