Myanmar: Gentiloni expresses appreciation for the release of political prisoners

From Yangon, where he is on an official visit, the Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Paolo Gentiloni, expressed “appreciation for the decision of the Burmese Government” to release over the next two weeks the political prisoners, activists and students currently in custody.

During his two-day visit to Myanmar, Minister Gentiloni met Foreign Minister Aung San Suu Kyi and the President of the Republic, U Htin Kyaw.

Mr Gentiloni was the first Western Foreign Minister to meet with Aung San Suu Kyi after her appointment as Foreign Minister of Myanmar. The Italian minister confirmed “Italy’s full support for any effort made by the new Government in pursuing the Country’s peace and unity”.
