The Italian Cultural Institutes in Toronto and Montreal play a key role in promoting Italian culture throughout Canada.
The Institutes, official bodies of the Italian government, organize cultural and academic events aimed at promoting and sharing Italian culture, language, values, and heritage with local communities. The goal of these popular events is to build awareness and knowledge of Italy’s vibrant reality.
The Institutes support intercultural and multilateral dialogue based on the principles of equality, democracy and international solidarity, encouraging also cultural exchange through the establishment of relationships in the arts, theatre, music and cinema between Italy and Canada.
In addition to planning cultural events, often in cooperation with other European and/or Canadian organizations, the Institutes are also an important reference point for citizens of any nationality interested in Italian culture.
At their locations, the Institutes organize art exhibitions, conferences and multimedia projections, as well as Italian languages courses. The institutes also have video libraries and libraries.
More specifically, the aims of the Italian Cultural institutes are:
- Disseminating the Italian language through courses and teacher-training;
- Promoting Italian cinema by participating in international festivals;
- Creating exhibitions on aspects of Italian culture;
- Promoting Italian theatre through the presentation of Italian companies or through the support of local companies that stage pieces by Italian authors;
- Programming musical events for the presentation of established artists and emerging talent;
- Organizing initiatives directed to the large Italian community in Canada.
