L’italien au Canada et dans les universités canadiennes
Selon le dernier recensement du Gouvernement canadien en 2016, environ 375,640 personnes au Canada sont de langue maternelle italienne.
Généralement, l’étude de l’italien dans les écoles et les universités canadiennes est plus répandue dans les zones où il y a une présence importante de communautés italiennes. De plus, il est souvent inclus dans différents programmes scolaires grâce à des accords spécifiques avec les autorités provinciales.
En outre, dans plusieurs universités de la Nouvelle-Écosse, du Québec, de l’Ontario, du Manitoba, de l’Alberta et de la Colombie-Britannique on peut trouver des départements d’italien qui offrent des cours spécifiques mais aussi des programmes de base de l’enseignement de la langue, dont certains pour les adultes dans une perspective d’éducation permanente, un processus d’apprentissage continu qui touche toute la vie d’un individu.
Dans le programme plus général de la « Promotion du Sistema Italia », la valorisation et la diffusion de la langue et de la culture italiennes dans le monde est une des cinq zones de l’action prioritaire. Ce programme inclut des figures professionnelles nommées par le Ministère des Affaires Etrangères et de la Coopération Internationale (MAECI), des éducateurs et éducatrices en Italie qui sont envoyés dans de nombreux pays du monde comme directeurs académiques, cadres administratifs, enseignants des écoles italiennes à l’étranger ou lecteurs. Actuellement, au Canada, il y a deux professeures, une à l’Université Carleton à Ottawa et l’autre à l’Université de la Colombie-Britannique à Vancouver, tandis qu’à Toronto et Vancouver il y a deux directeurs académiques, auxquels s’ajoutera bientôt un autre à Montréal.
