The President of the Council of Ministers, Giorgia Meloni, had a telephone conversation today with the Canadian Prime Minister and current G7 President, Justin Trudeau.
The call provided an opportunity to once again express best wishes for Canada’s G7 Presidency and to reiterate the hope that there can be full continuity with the results achieved by the Italian Presidency, with particular reference to Africa, the Mediterranean and irregular migration.
During the conversation, President Meloni informed the Canadian Prime Minister that she will be unable to personally participate in the G7 Leaders’ video conference on 24 February, as it precisely coincides with the lunch she is to host for Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed and the subsequent speech at the Italy-UAE Business Forum, as part of the long-planned State visit to Italy by the President of the United Arab Emirates. The Italian Government will be represented by the Vice-President of the Council of Ministers and Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Antonio Tajani.
The call also provided an opportunity for an exchange of views on the major current issues at international level and the latest developments concerning Ukraine. In this regard, President Meloni reiterated that the priority for Italy is the same as for the rest of Europe, the Atlantic Alliance and Kyiv: to do everything possible to bring an end to the conflict and achieve peace. President Meloni also highlighted that it has been the support of the West together with Ukraine’s courage and determination that have created the conditions to now be able to talk about a possible agreement. Italy, together with the United States and its European and Western partners, is working for a lasting peace in Europe, which needs real and effective security guarantees for Ukraine.
