Yesterday afternoon, the Embassy of Italy in Canada organized at the Canadian Museum of History in Gatineau the North American premiere of the documentary “Liliana”, directed by Ruggero Gabbai. The film, which was recently presented at the Rome Film Festival, focuses on the life of Senator Liliana Segre.
In his opening remarks, Ambassador Alessandro Cattaneo emphasized the extraordinary ethical and civic value of Senator Segre’s testimony. In this regard, Ambassador Cattaneo noted that the memory of the Holocaust is not only a moral obligation but also an essential point of reference for the defense of democratic values, in light of the link between historical memory, identity, and democracy.
Following the screening of the film, there was a conversation with director Gabbai, moderated by Professor Costanza Musu from the School of Public and International Affairs at the University of Ottawa.
The event was attended by a large and distinguished audience, including representatives from the Canadian Parliament and institutions, Holocaust survivors and their families, as well as Ambassadors from European Union countries, the G7, and Israel.
This initiative follows an event organized on January 27th by the Italian Embassy at the Canadian Museum of History in collaboration with the Centre for Holocaust Education and Scholarship in Ottawa to honor Holocaust Remembrance Day. During the event, two excerpts of the documentary were screened.
“Liliana” will also be presented this evening in Montreal by the Consulate General of Italy and the Italian Cultural Institute.
