Italian emergency aid to Libya

During the past month of March, Italian Cooperation contributed 1 million euro to the World Food Programme (WFP) with the aim of providing food assistance for 1 month to 70,000 beneficiaries (14,000 households), selected among the most vulnerable categories (15 percent were infants under 5 years of age, and 36 percent minors between 5 and 17 years of age) of the population of Western Libya.

In cooperation with the Italian Ministry of Defence, the Civilian Hospital of Mitiga, located in the surroundings of Tripoli, will receive 3 WHO Basic Emergency Kits (each of which can ensure treatment for 10,000 patients for 3 months) and 4 Emergency Trauma Kits containing material and drugs to aid trauma patients (1 every 100 cases) for the treatment of 400 injured patients.

The basic health kit has been designed to provide primary health care. It contains anesthetics, pain killers, anti-allergics, anti-infection medication, disinfectants and antiseptics, gastrointestinal medication, medical devices, antibiotics and antipyretic drugs. The trauma kit contains medical devices and drugs to cater to patients needing surgical procedures.

The Italian Cooperation has also considered sending some medical kits to the Bengasi Hospital, by means of a donation to the Government of National Accord. The time of delivery will be defined at a later stage.

Such contributions complement the humanitarian aid package which the Italian Cooperation set up in the past month of January for a total value of 1.4 million euro (500,000 euro to the CICR, 450,000 euro to the UNHCR, 450,000 euro to the IMO) in support of the first aid actions implemented in the country by international organisations.

Further humanitarian actions will be determined in the future according to the requests coming from the Libyan national authorities, and after assessing unfolding security situations.
