The Ambassador of Italy to Canada, Alessandro Cattaneo, has been on an official visit since yesterday to the Province of Saskatchewan, located in the Canadian Prairies and of major economic importance, particularly in the agricultural, energy and mining sectors.
Accompanied by the Consul General of Italy in Vancouver, Paolo Miraglia Del Giudice, Ambassador Cattaneo was received by the Lieutenant Governor, the Hon. Bernadette McIntyre. The discussions focused on opportunities to further strengthen economic, academic, cultural and social relations between Italy and the Canadian Province.
Ambassador Cattaneo also held institutional meetings with the Mayor of Regina, the provincial capital, Chad Bachynski, and with the Hon. Jamie Martens, Provincial Secretary and Member of the Provincial Legislative Assembly. Subsequently, the Ambassador attended a session of the Provincial Legislative Assembly.
In the afternoon, Ambassador Cattaneo addressed a well-attended event at the “Guglielmo Marconi” Italian Club in Regina, a centre of the associative and cultural life of the Italian-Canadian community in the provincial capital.
Ambassador Cattaneo’s mission will continue today with a meeting with the Provincial Minister of Trade, the Hon. Warren Kaeding, aimed at discussing strategies and priorities for strengthening trade and mutual investments.
Ambassador Cattaneo will then travel to the city of Saskatoon to meet representatives of the local Italian scientific community and visit the Italian Cultural Centre of Saskatoon.
Meetings are also scheduled with the Mayor of Saskatoon, Cynthia Block, and the President of the University of Saskatchewan, Prof. Vince Bruni-Bossio.
The visit will conclude with a tour of the Canadian Light Source Synchrotron (CLS).
