The Ambassador of Italy to Canada, Alessandro Cattaneo, attended yesterday the celebrations in Montreal marking the 90th anniversary of “Casa d’Italia”, accompanied by Trade Consul Fortunato Mangiola.
Founded in 1936 as a meeting place and a reference point for the Italian community in Montreal and in Quebec, requisitioned during the Second World War and later revived at its conclusion, “Casa d’Italia” has consistently played a fundamental role throughout its long history in the life of Italians in Montreal.
Also present at the celebrations, in addition to “Casa d’Italia” President Perry Mazzanti and Director General Giovanna Giordano, were the Honorary Presidents of the evening Lino Saputo and Mirella Saputo, Canadian Members of Parliament and Senators, the Mayor of Montreal Soraya Martinez, city councillors, members of the COMITES, and numerous representatives from the business and cultural sectors.
In his remarks, Ambassador Cattaneo retraced the long history of “Casa d’Italia”, highlighting its extraordinary contribution to the civic and social development of the Italian-Canadian community and of the city of Montreal itself, as well as the importance of the services that “Casa d’Italia” and the many associations that characterize the Italian-Canadian community in Montreal continue to provide to our community.
