On the occasion of the celebrations for Canada’s National Day, I would like to extend to You, Governor General, and to all Your fellow citizens my most heartfelt congratulations and those of the Italian Republic.

I express my full satisfaction with the strength and depth of the ties that unite our countries, marked by sincere friendship and founded on shared ideals of freedom, peace, and democracy. The intense and continuous social, economic, and cultural exchanges, also fueled by the large and vibrant community of Italian origin, further contribute to the vitality of our bilateral relationship.

Canada and Italy – bonded by a shared vision of the current major challenges – work together effectively in multilateral fora to promote the protection of fundamental rights, sustainable development, and a rules-based international order, which is an essential prerequisite for global security and stability. These exact priorities have guided the work of our subsequent G7 presidencies, which coincided with a particularly complex phase of global relations.

In light of the current international context, I am confident that our countries will continue to work jointly in support of multilateralism and of the Atlantic Alliance unity of action.

With these hopes in mind, I renew my warmest congratulations on today’s important celebration, and I am pleased to extend them to the friendly Canadian people.

Sergio Mattarella
