The Ambassador of Italy to Canada, Alessandro Cattaneo, took part yesterday in the opening events of the exhibition dedicated to the Torlonia Collection marbles, open to the public until July 19 at the prestigious Montreal Museum of Fine Arts.
Organized in collaboration with the Fondazione Torlonia, the exhibition brings together 58 masterpieces of Roman sculpture from the renowned Torlonia Collection.
Among those attending the opening vernissage were the Museum’s Director, Stéphane Aquin; the Director of the Torlonia Foundation, Carlotta Loverini Botta; the Director of the Museum Foundation, Jo-Anne Duchesne; and representatives from Canadian institutional, academic, and cultural circles.
Earlier in the morning, Ambassador Cattaneo spoke at the conference “Italy: Classical Design”, organized by the Consulate General of Italy in Montreal in collaboration with the Italian Cultural Institute of Montreal as part of the Italian Design Day. The initiative featured the participation of Salvatore Amura, Director General of Valore Italia and appointed Ambassador of Italian Design in the World, as well as Italian and Canadian architects and curators, who explored the theme of the reuse and reinterpretation of Roman marble from Antiquity to contemporary architecture and design.
In his remarks, Ambassador Cattaneo highlighted the close cooperation between Italy’s diplomatic-consular network and the Italian Cultural Institutes in Canada and leading Canadian artistic and cultural institutions, including the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts. He also thanked the Museum’s leadership for their commitment in bringing the exhibition to Montreal, describing it as an ideal starting point for the development of a long-term strategic partnership.
