The Chief of Staff of the Italian Army, General Carmine Masiello, paid an official visit to Canada, accompanied by a delegation of officers from the Italian Army General Staff.
The visit, which included the cities of Ottawa, Trenton, and Montreal, aimed to strengthen bilateral military cooperation and deepen discussions on training, modernization, and the operational capabilities of the Canadian Armed Forces.
During the meeting with the Commander of the Canadian Army, Lieutenant General Michael Wright, strategic issues were addressed such as the evolution of the Canadian Army’s modernization program, the international missions UNIFIER and REASSURANCE, Arctic environment exercises (Exercise NANOOK), and next-generation IED threats.
During the visit, General Masiello emphasized:
“We operate in an increasingly complex and unpredictable world. Climate change, the rise of autocracies, disruptive technologies, and disinformation campaigns are reshaping how we protect our Nations and defend our values and interests. Security increasingly requires cooperation, training, and interoperability—essential elements of deterrence.”
Particularly significant was the visit to the Canadian Army Advanced Warfare Center in Trenton, where operational demonstrations related to training in extreme environments were observed, and to the Deployable Technical Analysis Laboratory (DTAL), a center of excellence for explosives analysis.
The visit concluded in Ottawa with a wreath-laying ceremony at the National War Memorial and an institutional meeting at the Residence of the Italian Ambassador to Canada, H.E. Alessandro Cattaneo.
The mission further strengthened the already solid bond between Italy and Canada within the framework of NATO multilateral cooperation and the sharing of best practices in operations and training.
