Artificial Intelligence Act: MEPs adopt landmark law

The European Parliament approved today the Artificial Intelligence (AI) Act.

The regulation is the result of an agreement reached with EU member states in December 2023, with the aim of ensuring the protection of fundamental rights, democracy, the rule of law and environmental sustainability in the use of high-risk AI systems, while promoting innovation and ensuring Europe’s leadership in the field. Said regulation establishes obligations in the use of AI, based on the possible risks and level of impact.

The Act is the first, at the international level, to regulate this area in a widespread manner and might serve as an important source of inspiration and a precedent for Governments and International Organizations wishing to address the issues related to AI, using shared standards.

According to experts, further EU legislation on AI, aimed at regulating aspects not yet touched upon, could be drafted following the European elections next June.
