Claudio Taffuri was born in Rome in 1959. Following a degree in Economics and Commerce from the University of Rome he entered the Italian Foreign Service in 1992. His initial assignment at the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs was to the Encryption and Telecommunications Centre and later to the Directorate General of Emigration and Social Affairs. In 1995, he was posted to Maputo, Mozambique as Commercial Secretary until 1999, when he was transferred to the Italian Embassy in Belgrade as First Secretary. That same year he also headed the Italian Office in Pristina. Upon his return to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Rome in 2002, he was assigned to the Coordination Unit of the Secretariat General of the Ministry and subsequently to the Ministry’s Crisis Response Centre. In 2004, he was named Chief of the Secretariat of the Directorate General for Europe and in 2007 was posted to Geneva as Commercial Counsellor at Italy’s Permanent Mission to the International Organizations and Deputy Permanent Representative of Italy to the World Trade Organization. From 2011 to 2012, he served in Herat as NATO Senior Civilian Representative for Regional Command-West and Head of the civilian component of the Provincial Reconstruction Team. He returned to Rome in 2012 and was named Head of the Crisis Response Centre.

On April 19, 2017, Claudio Taffuri presented his Letters of Credence as Ambassador of Italy to Canada to Governor General David Johnston.
