I am very happy to celebrate the Italian National Day with all of you today – my first as Italy\u2019s Ambassador to Canada.<\/P>

L’anniversaire de la naissance de la R\u00e9publique Italienne que nous c\u00e9l\u00e9brons aujourd’hui co\u00efncide avec le d\u00e9but du mandat du nouveau gouvernement italien, qui a \u00e9t\u00e9 form\u00e9 gr\u00e2ce au soutien d’une vaste majorit\u00e9 parlermentaire. Ce gouvernement aura pour t\u00e2che d’adopter les r\u00e9formes n\u00e9cessaires pour affronter la crise, renforcer l’\u00e9conomie du pays, encourager la croissance et cr\u00e9er des emplois, et ce en coordination \u00e9troite avec nos partenaires europ\u00e9ens.
Entretemps l’Italie continuera, comme elle l’a toujours fait, a jouer un r\u00f4le de premier plan et \u00e0 exercer ses responsabilit\u00e9s sur la sc\u00e8ne internationale avec le Canada et les autres Pays amis et alli\u00e9s.<\/P>

As you know, Italy and Canada are bound by ties of close friendship, as proven by the many meetings in recent years of the Prime Ministers and the Ministers of our two countries, occasions which have further strengthened the extraordinary cooperation between Ottawa and Rome.<\/P>
\n

This special relationship is founded on many years of working closely together in NATO, within the United Nations, the G8, the G20, and on deeply shared views on all international issues including Arctic Council where Italy has been recently admitted as observer thanks to the strong and the decisive support of Canada.<\/P>

Mais cette relation sp\u00e9ciale entre Rome et Ottawa repose aussi sur les centaines de milliers de ressortissants d’origine italienne qui, gr\u00e2ce aux opportunit\u00e9s qui leur ont \u00e9t\u00e9 offertes et gr\u00e2ce \u00e0 leurs capacit\u00e9s, ont conquis des positions de tr\u00e8s haut niveau et ont contribu\u00e9, avec leur travail, au progr\u00e8s et aux succ\u00e8s du Canada \u00e0 travers le monde et \u00e0 cr\u00e9er un mod\u00e8le de soci\u00e9t\u00e9 parmi les plus accueillants et les plus avanc\u00e9s du monde.<\/P>

Today more than ever Italy considers Canada as a fundamental partner in order to build a better future of freedom, peace and prosperity around the world. There is an absolutely shared vision between Rome and Ottawa on issues of paramount importance as international security, economy, the protection of people in need.\u00a0 The joint efforts in the international crises areas, the initiatives in favour of disarmament, the support to the United Nations in the peacekeeping operations and the promotion of\u00a0 human rights are some of the common initiatives that Italy and Canada have performed together in the last 65 years.

Toutes les conditions sont r\u00e9unies, bien \u00e9videmment, pour d\u00e9velopper ult\u00e9rieurement ces relations dans tous les domaines, en commen\u00e7ant, bien s\u00fbr, par la culture, l\u2019enseignement de la langue italienne, l\u2019innovation technologique et la coop\u00e9ration dans les domaines \u00e9conomiques et industriels, notamment dans les secteurs de l’a\u00e9ronautique, de l’\u00e9nergie et des ressources naturelles.
Sans compter que la collaboration entre Rome et Ottawa conna\u00eetra sans aucun doute un essor spectaculaire d\u00e8s que l’accord commercial entre le Canada et l’Union Europ\u00e9enne sera sign\u00e9 et entrera en vigueur.
But this years celebrations give us the opportunity to look at our common past, to remember. To remember the 100,000 Canadian soldiers who, in 1943 crossed the Ocean and in many cases lost their lives to liberate Italy and Europe from the nazi dictatorships and from occupation.
This year we celebrate, in fact, the 70th anniversary of the landing of the 1st Canadian Division in Sicily, called “Operation Husky”, which began\u00a0 the campaign for the liberation of my Country.
To these valiant and courageous soldiers, many of them Italian-Canadians, who fought in those bloody and decisive battles, goes our most profound gratitude. It is from them that the generations who grew up in postwar Italy received the gifts of freedom, peace, democracy, and security.<\/P>
