Once registered in the resident population registry, the foreign citizen may begin the process for the recognition of citizenship\u00a0<em>jure sanguinis<\/em>\u00a0(the duration of which is set by law at 180 days in total), by submitting the documentation listed in Circular K.28.1\/1991. It is not possible for the applicant to be represented by a legal proxy or anyone else; the applicant must be physically present in Italy.<\/p>\n<p>The request for the issuance of the \u201cNon-Renunciation Certificate\u201d is made directly by the Italian Municipality (<em>Comune<\/em>) to the Consulate,\u00a0exclusively via PEC\u00a0(certified email). The Consulate\u2019s reply to the Municipality (not to the applicant) is also\u00a0only via PEC, provided the request was submitted correctly.<\/p>\n<p>Applicants\u00a0may not<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>contact the Consular Office directly regarding procedures handled by Municipalities or by other Consular Offices, as those processes fall outside the office\u2019s jurisdiction and cannot be tracked.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"If the applicant has decided to establish residency in Italy, the authorities of the relevant Italian Municipality (Comune) are responsible for recognizing Italian citizenship.
