Dear Ambassadors and Defense Attaches, Dear Members of  Parliament, Dear General Jonathan Vance,  Dear Members of the Canadian Armed Forces, Ladies and Gentlemen,
my special thanks to all of you for being with us tonight at the wonderful Space and Aviation Museum on the occasion of the Italian Armed Forces Day!  Your presence proves your friendship towards my Country, as well as your tribute for the women and men who have fallen, or been wounded, in the line of duty, and for their families.
By being here, you are also honoring those who serve today with commitment and dedication.
For the past decades thousands of Italians and Canadians have earned enormous respect – at home and abroad – by answering the call to bring peace around the world in many international military operations.
It is thanks to these military – allow me to call them heroes – that our two Countries can enjoy those fundamental values of liberty, democracy, rule of law and promotion of human rights, which form the very essence of our two nations.

I am grateful to Major General Luca Goretti our Defense Attaché and to all his team – the officers and members of the Army, Navy, Air Force and Carabinieri – for making this event possible.
We are proud to have you here.

In two days, on November 4th, the Italians will celebrate the end of World War One.
It is a date which has long been proclaimed Victory Day and the day of National Unity and which now celebrates the Italain Armed Forces Day.

Canada and Italy defended together  in the past and stull defend today, core values which are still crucial today.
It is these ideals which motivated our forces: whether they serve shoulder-to-shoulder in Afghanistan in Lebanon, in the Unified Protector mission, in the Balkans, or yet today in Irak in the anti ISIS international coaliton.
The close friendship that joins Italy and Canada is reinforced by the deeply rooted bonds between our Armed Forces and is founded on many years of working closely together in NATO, within the United Nations, the G7, the G20, and on deeply shared views on all international issues.

Ladies and Gentlemen,

This year’s celebration also invites us to remember and to honour the one hundred thousand Canadians who 70 years ago sacrificed their youth, and in too many cases, their lives in Ortona, in the Liri Valley, and in Montecassino, to free Italy and Europe from Nazi tyranny and occupation.

We will  never forget the generosity, the sacrifices, and the blood shed by the 6,000 Canadian military who never returned to their homes in order to save ours, who would never again embrace their families so that our families could raise their children in a free country and live in a better future.  To these brave and valiant soldiers, and to Canada, we owe an eternal debt of gratitude because  it is from them, that the generations raised in Italy in the post-war years received the gifts of freedom, peace, democracy, security and prosperity.

Merci
