The endocannabinoidome and gut microbiome: complexity and redundancy in cell-to-cell communication

Day of Italian Research in the World

The Day of Italian Research in the World is a day dedicated to highlighting the contribution of Italian researchers to international scientific efforts and to promote the dissemination of their results.

The Embassy of Italy to Canada, in collaboration with the Italian Cultural Institute in Montreal the Consulate General of Italyin Montreal and the Italian Scientific Community in Canada (CSIC)-Québec section, is pleased to present, on the occasion of the of Italian Research in the World, the conference by Professor Vincenzo Di Marzo:

Vincenzo Di Marzo is Canada Excellence Research Chair on the Microbiome-Endocannabinoidome Axis in Metabolic Health at Laval University, Quebec, and associated Research Director at the Institute of Biomolecular Chemistry of the National Research Council in Pozzuoli, Italy.

A chemical signaling system that plays a fundamental role in mammalian physiology and pathology is the endocannabinoidome. This system is now emerging as also being able to communicate with, and therefore regulate and be regulated by, another complex system: the gut microbiome. Through its billions of microorganisms living in symbiosis with their host and their arsenal of genes, proteins, and small metabolites, the gut microbiome provides a much wider array of cellular communication possibilities, which, when disrupted, may however contribute to various pathologies. These two systems and their reciprocal interactions will be described in Prof. Di Marzo’s lecture: The endocannabinoidome and gut microbiome: complexity and redundancy in cell-to-cell communication.
