FAQs ON ENTRY TO CANADA DURING THE ONGOING COVID-19 EMERGENCY

Is a pre-departure COVID-19 test required to enter Canada? Yes. Starting January 7, 2021, all passengers five years of age or older must present documentation of a negative laboratory test result. The test must be performed using a COVID-19 molecular polymerase chain reaction (or PCR) test within 72 hours prior to boarding a flight to Canada. Anyone who receives a negative test result and is authorized to enter Canada must still complete the full mandatory 14-day quarantine period. Additional information is available here.

ATTENTION: As of February 22, 2021, all air travellers are required to take a COVID-19 molecular test upon arrival in Canada before exiting the airport. Travellers must also book at their own expense a 3-night stay in a government-authorized hotel, while awaiting the test results.

Can I travel to Canada for tourism? No. The Canadian government has barred access to all visitors from foreign countries, including Italy, because of the Covid-19 epidemic. Additional information is available here.

When will the Canadian border re-open? It is not possible to provide a date at the present time.

Can I apply for a work or study visa to Canada even if the border is currently closed? For questions regarding visas to Canada, please contact the Canadian Embassy or Consulate nearest your place of residence. Additional information is available here.

Can I transit through a Canadian airport? Airport transits are allowed under certain conditions. For more information, see the following web page.

I am planning to study in Canada; am I allowed to enter? As of 20 October 2020 international students are allowed to enter Canada under certain conditions. The exemption is being granted only to students enrolled in the educational institutions indicated by the Canadian Government in a special list (Designated Learning Institutions list). Among the entry requirements it is necessary to be in possession of a valid study permit, in relation to which you will need to contact the Canadian Embassy or Consulate closest to your residence. The obligation to observe, upon arrival, a period of 14 days of mandatory quarantine remains in force. Additional information is available here.
