Cooperation: 2016 Plan passed. Gentiloni: “Concrete action to relaunch Development Cooperation’s strategic role”

The Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation chaired the meeting of the Joint Development Cooperation Committee held at the Farnesina. The Committee defined the 2016 plan with a total of 448 million Euros, of which roughly 213 million for the multilateral channel, approximately 120 million for the bilateral channel and over 113 million for emergencies. The principal beneficiaries of voluntary contributions through the multilateral channel are the “Global Fund against AIDS, TBC and Malaria”, with 40 million euros and the UNHCR, with 9 million, more than nine times higher than in 2015.

In addition, the Committee approved two initiatives, the General Budget Support Programme for Mozambique and the Tunisian Integrated Rural Development Programme, for a total of more than 20 million euros.

Minister Gentiloni said: “Through these deliberations we got to the core competences of the Joint Committee, one of the pillars of Italian Cooperation’s new governance system, and concretely followed up on the Government’s intention to relaunch the strategic role of Development Cooperation through a gradual but constant rise in resources over the coming years.”
